When are they included?
Test Primary Data records are unlike the Test Development, Test Review, and Test Use records in two ways (as described below). For this reason, Test Primary Data records are not presented in a parallel tab in the Test Master Profile. Instead, they appear as a link after the summary, just above the tabs:

  • Tests that are available commercially always include a Test Primary Data record—this is to accommodate fields that are not present in the Test Master Profile (e.g., the publisher’s website). In addition, these commercial tests may have Test Development, Test Review, or Test Use records.
  • A small number of noncommercial tests (e.g., those donated from the Archives of the History of American Psychology) also have a Test Primary Data record but only if relevant research cannot currently be found to create a Test Development, Test Review, or Test Use record. For this small group, if scholarly research is later found that can be used to create a Test Development, Test Review, or Test Use record, the Primary Data Record will then be removed. (We welcome your help! If you know of relevant research for a noncommercial test, please feel free to contact us at psyctests@apa.org.)

What information do they contain?
Information in Primary Data Records may have come from the test publisher (e.g., in the case of commercially available tests) or by careful analysis of a print copy (e.g., of a test found in an archive or donated from a university’s collection).

Unlike Development, Review, and Use records, Primary Data Records do not present information about related research. Instead, Primary Data Records display information about the test itself. This information may have been culled from a print copy of the test from an archive, for example, or materials provided by the test publisher.

The Primary Data Record page includes as many as possible of the searchable fields and limits, including index terms and supporting documentation, when available. For tests such as those from an archive or web site, a link to the test will also be included.
